Homebrew and Workbrew FAQs
Is Homebrew independent of Workbrew?
Yes. Homebrew is an open source project and part of the non-profit Open Source Collective. Workbrew is a separate company that builds products on top of Homebrew. No one holds a leadership position in both organizations. Homebrew is governed by its Maintainers under an independent governance structure: Lead Maintainers act collectively as Homebrew’s leadership and formal governance decisions are made by Maintainer vote.
Will Homebrew remain free and open source?
Yes. Homebrew is free to use and will remain free and open source. The terms and business models of downstream products do not affect the upstream Homebrew project, its license or its governance. Homebrew is BSD-2-Clause licensed with no CLA and contributions from more than 10,000 people across its repositories, so relicensing the project as a whole would require agreement from the relevant copyright holders or replacement of their contributions and is not practically achievable.
Does Homebrew require third-party tooling?
No. Homebrew can be used directly by individuals and organizations. Its security and supply chain protections are built in and enabled by default. No separate platform is required, though organizations may choose additional tooling to meet their own deployment, management or compliance requirements.
